Driveway Gate

Flat pack driveway gate information pack.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Given that most driveway gates today are automatic it makes good sense that any gate design includes allowance for gate automation. A simple fact is that most of the world’s gate automation is made in Italy and a quick look at Italian gates tells us that they build things rather differently to the Australian market. Italian gates in the main are very heavy using mostly solid steel sections and as a consequence the gate automation is designed and built to move heavy gates.
This is not a problem when working with steel but does present an issue when working with aluminium which accounts for up to half of all gates in Australia.

Corner brace. Main Extrusion

So when we designed the flat pack driveway system we were faced with the challenge of maintaining good weight and rigidity.
The answer was not that complicated as simply increasing commonly used wall thickness solved the issue of weight whilst the rigidity aspect took a little longer to address it too in the end was quite simple with a welded corner brace (see diagram below).

ASSEMBLY

Any flat pack product you order is cut to size and ready to assemble and when asked "how handy do I need to be" we answer that if you can use a cordless drill and a rivet gun you are most of the way there.
Each driveway gate will have three essential components –

  • Main frame four sections (mitered corners).
  • Four welded corner braces.
  • Infill section (cut to size with a small movement allowance).
Drill

Rivet Gun

Despite the strength of the main frame and the heavy duty corner braces the real strength of you driveway gate comes from securely fastening your infill sections into place. For example an 1800 high gate may have up to 24 slats in the centre infill and apart from giving us some extra weight we want when correctly fastened in place this adds nearly 100 rivets to your gate and pulls everything together.

ALL THOSE RIVETS WILL LOOK UGLY!

Not with the Automatic Solutions flat pack system. The whole flat pack range includes “concealed fixing covers” which hide all infill fasteners. When complete your covers pop into place and keep everything neat and tidy.

WHAT SIZE RESTRAINTS ARE THERE IN THE DRIVEWAY GATE RANGE?

SLIDING GATES
Sliding gates have a maximum width of 6450mm. Other than this material restriction we include slat braces for gates over 2500mm wide in any case.
SWING GATES
Generally speaking swing gates will give less issues and maintenance when no wider than 2500mm in width. From a material point of view there is no restriction but over 2500mm wide but you will need to consider carefully what posts you will use and the need for electric gate locks with automation. Also ensure your hinges are the 180HINGE which will allow you to adjust for any site unevenness or movement and sag. We do not recommend swing gates in flat pack exceed 3500mm wide and suggest these be custom made with designed bracing.

WHAT POSTS SHOULD I USE?

We have 65x65 posts with caps for our sliding gates and 100x100 posts with caps for the swing gates which are to automated.. You can get the posts in matching colours for the powder coat range and Colorbond terrain for the wood grain Western Red Cedar.

WHAT ABOUT GATE DESIGN?

All gates have a certain amount of flex and/or sag with design and size determining how much of either. As a general rule this does not affect a sliding gate much at all but does cause issues with swing gates. Sliding gates can be ordered as wide as 6450mm but swing gates are not recommended wider than 3500mm. Choose from various designs which you can vary to individual taste by choosing the required gap between uprights or horizontal members. Click here to view a PDF of available designs.
